Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics: Special Issue –
Ophthalmic Medical Image Analysis
The retina can manifest many ocular diseases and systemic diseases that affect the circulation and the brain.
Typical diseases of eyes are age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma, which are the main causes of
blindness in both developed and developing world. Systemic diseases include diabetic retinopathy from
diabetes, hypertensive retinopathy from cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple
sclerosis or Alzheimer, or Parkinson. Whereas debilitating symptoms endured by these diseases and the huge
cost they impose on individuals and society, early and reliable diagnosis strategies and effective treatments are
very important and urgently needed.
At present most studies of the retina as well as the visual pathway are with the aids of imaging modalities such
as optical coherence tomography (OCT), scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, fundus, magnetic resonance
imaging(MRI). Meanwhile computer-aided image analysis techniques are being used widely in retinal biom-
arkers research, and the study of pathologic correlation between visual pathway and diseases.
This special issue is aimed at bringing together scientists and clinicians from multiple disciplines in the growing
ophthalmic and visual pathway related image analysis community, promoting interdisciplinary research, and
encouraging international collaborations in this increasingly active and important field.
